Overview: Rules and Sequences, as found under Marketing Automation, are a set of powerful tools you can utilize to set up automated actions based on triggers performed by interaction with website content such as submission of forms, processing of ecommerce orders, event and course registrations and other actions.

There are a wide variety of combination for triggers and actions the rules can be set for, so it is difficult to cover them all but the general way to work with the Rules editor is the same regardless of which combination of triggers and actions you choose.
