Set a Link to Open in a New Window

Overview: Setting a link to open in a new window can be useful for PDFs and other documents and links for when you may want the web visitor to go to the link destination in a new tab or window on their browser.

Summary: Setting a link to open in a new window will cause the link destination to open in a new browser window or tab.

Generally, this option should be used for all links to Documents since Document links will replace the window the visitor was on by default without a back button to your site. This will cause the web visitor to be orphaned from your website.

You may also want to selectively consider this option for other types of links, as one benefit is this option makes it easy for the web visitor to get back to the original page they were on when they clicked the link.

How to Set a Link to Open in a New Window

  1. In a Content Editor, highlight the text or select an image that you want to become a link.
  2. Click on the “Add Link” tool in the tool set to bring up the Insert Link dialog.
  3. If you are editing a link that has already been created: select “Open in a New Window” option in the “Target” menu and then click Save.
  4. If the link has not yet been created: follow the necessary steps to create the link first, then once back in the Inert Link dialog after creating the link, select “Open in a New Window” option in the “Target” menu and then click Save.
