Forum Elements: Discussions, Threads, Posts, and Replies

Overview: A Forum is a content object that provides a discussion board for your website users to participate in online conversations.

Forums are comprised of the following in hierarchical order:

Getting Familiar with the Elements of a Forum

Forum

A forum is the website content object that houses the entire discussion board. It can be placed on a page just like any other object, or used as an element within a course in the Learning Center.

Discussions

Discussions are the top-most level topics under which a set of related sub-topics, known as threads, can then be discussed. The hierarchical structure for a forum may contain several discussions, each of which may in turn have several threads.

Discussion topics are predefined and setup by you to give your forum participants some topical themes presented into organized subject matter.  They can be created by either a logged in Account Manager, and/or a logged in Contact who has been assigned as a Forum Administrator.

Threads

The thread element of a forum is a second level sub-topic and is found under a discussion main topic. Threads are designed to further narrow in on specified topics that you pre-set relevant to the geneal theme of their discussion topic.

Threads are best setup to provide a prompt, or simple set of guidelines to help direct the conversation for your forum participants.  When using a forum in a course, the threads can be set at an individual content module level, thus the topic of that content module becomes the specified topic of that thread.

Just like discussions topics, threads are also predefined and set for your forum’s participants. They too can only be created by either a logged in Account Manager Administrator, or a logged in Contact who has been assigned the role of Forum Administrator.

Threads are then the forum element under which your forum users will post their comments and replies.

Posts

Posts are the first conversational element in the forum that are created by your forum participants. They are created under the level of a thread as found under the level of an overall discussion.

Replies

Replies are also created by your forum participants and are done in reply to another participant's post.
