Set a Forum for Use in a Course

 Locations:

  • Learning Management/Courses/Course Editor -> Classroom Options Section and/or
  • Learning Management/Courses/Course Module Editor -> Forum Thread Section

Overview: Forums can be used in two ways interchangeably within a course. You can simply choose to add forum threads to course modules as needed. These will appear only at the bottom of each assigned module and can be used without the presentation of the entire forum object for ease of use. You can also choose to add a forum to the course as a main level page to show on the left menu. This course level forum used in this way may house more general course level topics that are not necessarily associated within a module, however it will also house a discussion that will gather all threads from all the modules and place under one discussion.

In this module we provide an overview for the following:

Create a Forum for General Use in a Course

Location: Learning Management/Courses/Course Editor -> Classroom Options Section

In the Course Editor/Classroom Options section, click the checkbox next to “Include Forum” and save.  This will auto-create a forum and assign it to this Course.  This will appear in the Forum section of the LMS classroom for this course.  It will start with no discussions, threads, or posts, so at least one discussion with one thread with one post should be created by the Course creator to start off a conversation.

Create a Forum Thread for Use in Content Modules

Location: Learning Management/Courses/Course Module Editor -> Forum Thread Section

You can also create a forum by adding associating a thread to show within a specific Content, Event, or Assignment Module inside a Course. The thread will display at the bottom of any content that is in that module and is designed to be a directly related topic. It will also be displayed on the main forum page of the classroom if you have chosen to show the forum in the classroom options. All module threads are auto-grouped under a commond discussion called:  "Course Module Threads"
