Course Templates

Location: Learning Management/Courses/Course Templates/

Overview: If you use the same general course material, course schedule and/ or setup again and again for the same course, but offered in multiple instances or bundled offerings, you can save yourself some time by creating a Course Template that you can use as the basis for any future iterations of the course.

In this overview we cover:

What is a Course Template, how is it different from a Course?

Course Templates are designed to be static course objects that can be set up and created by you to be used as a template, or a foundation to start from when creating new courses. This can save you a lot of time when creating future courses.  The main difference between a Course and a Course Template is that Course Templates do not ever get used for any actual student course registrations like courses do, but other than that they are identical objects and their editors are virtually identical.

How are Course Templates used?

Course Templates are used to make copies from to help facilitate the creation of future courses that are identical in the core content and structure to your template that you will then use for registration. Templates are helpful as you will always have a relatively perfect ready-made foundation for your future courses that does not get arbitrarily changed or modified. In this light you can see that templates, if created effectively, are in a state that are ready to be duplicated for your upcoming courses with the same or almost the same content, depending on your needs.

How do you create Course Templates?

There are a few  ways you can create a Course Template. If you have the foresight enough to create one at the get-go, you can go directly to the Course Templates finders and click New. All you have to do after that is create the course content as you want it and click Save. (Learn More)

An alternative method to creating a Course Template upfront is to create a Course first then to save that Course as a Course Template after the fact. (Learn More)

Can you change or edit Course Templates?

Yes, Course Templates can be changed after they are created, so they are not locked in per se, but you would want to make any changes judiciously keeping in mind that the template is designed to be a ready-made version of a course that has as much in common as possible to all future interactions of that course.
